Shockers Invade Tacoma, Move to 2-0
March 29, 2008 University Place,
WA
Bobby Poeltl returned to action on Saturday and left his mark with 3 touchdowns marking the second game in a row a Shocker scored 3 times. In the season opener, Rory Lee found the endzone on three occassions.
Tonight belonged to the defense however, and specifically the disruption of defensive end Ron Strozyk. Strozyk made his presence felt on the Invaders first offensive snap dropping a runner for a 3 yard loss. Two plays later he sacked the Invader QB in the endzone for a safety to start the scoring. Ron would finish with 5 QB pressures, six tackles, three for loss and a sack to go with his safety. Knockdowns are not a recorded stat in semi pro ball but ask the Invaders how often the QB picked himself off the turf following a pass thanks to Strozyk and a relentless defense that forced six turnovers.
Poeltl opened his night nearly breaking a kickoff for six but was tripped up by a shoelace after 17 yards and alot of green in front of him. He followed that up with a 64-yard punt return for a TD before tacking on touchdowns on each of his two pass receptions. The Shockers special teams were not done there as Bryan Hooper returned another punt 56-yards for a touchdown and was also on the receiving end of a two-point conversion from Jacob Hicks following a bobbled hold on an extra point try.
Pat Hutnik remains perfect on PAT's going 6-6 on the night and 11-11 on the season.
South Sound takes their 2-0 record to Yakima next week to open their first-ever season of Evergreen Football League play. Yakima and South Sound met last season in Lacey with the Shockers winning 33-15 at home.
