Shockers Blow 17-point Lead
May 3, 2008 Burbank,
WA
In two trips over the mountains, the Shockers have built leads in the first half, only to see it's offensive production go into hibernation in the second half. The Blue Mountain Stars, last years GNFA champs and the only team to defeat South Sound in 2007 was the beneficiary this time. After building a 17-0 lead with 2 minutes to go in the first half on the strength of mid-season MVP David Minnis' two touchdowns, The Shockers gave new life to a struggling Stars offense when 2 long passes took the Stars to the endzone. 2 plays and 85-yards later it was 17-7 going into halftime. The Shockers would not score again
Much the same as what happened in Yakima (the current #1 team in the GNFA) the Shockers held a 21-6 edge at halftime only to go goose eggs in the second half. The Stars did the same taking the ensuing possession and following two unsuccessful rushing attempts bombed away for a 63-yard TD. The PAT was no good and the game was 17-13 Shockers. Two possessions later the Stars drove 93 yards on the back of 3 long pass plays to go on top 20-17. The Shockers would amass 313 yards of offense but could not get into striking range for Pat Hutnik to try to tie the game. Three second half turnovers ended any comeback chances.
Defensively the Shockers held the number one rusher in the Evergreen Football League to 27 yards on 20 carries forcing the Stars into a one-dimensional team, however it did not have an answer for the long ball, and could not force turnovers, something the Shockers are unfamiliar with after recording 76 in 2007. Next up is the steaming Tri City Knights who are throwing for over 400-yards per game and looking for a top seed in the EFL playoffs. Kickoff is at 4 pm in Shelton for what is being billed as "Family Night".
