Shockers Drop Lightning 39-2 in EFL Finale
May 24, 2008 Oak Harbor,
WA
The South Sound Shockers will be the #6 seed in the EVergreen Football League playoffs on June 7 following a 39-2 victory over the Skagit Valley Lightning in Oak Harbor, Washington. The Shockers will travel to Okanogan to take on the Commandos, a team the Shockers defeated 28-3 in Lacey earlier in the season.
The Shockers played without the services of RB Rory Lee (knee strain) and WR Bobby Poeltl (broken leg), and also lost WR Bryan Hooper early in the game to a knee injury. The offense struggled early turning the ball over 4 times before the rushing game came alive in the second half powered by RB David Minnis, FB David Gutierrez, and QB Ryan Reis.
Once again the Shocker defense flexed its muscle even while missing starters Ron Strozyk and Dan Chu holding the Lightning scoreless and unable to sustain any drives. South Sound blocked a 1st quarter punt and Eric Webster recovered for a touchdown to put the Shockers up 7-0. Pat Hutnik would tack on a Field Goal in the second to go up 10-0 at halftime.
David Minnis found the endzone twice in the 3rd period, and Jacob Hicks recorded a 2-point conversion following a bad snap on the PAT to put the Shockers up 25-0. The Lightning scored a safety when Ryan Reis was forced to bat a bad snap out of the back of the endzone, but on the ensuing possession in the 4th period, David Gutierrez bulled his way in for a 32-0 lead. Midway through the 4th, QB Ryan Reis ran in for the final TD of the evening. The Shockers play the Washington Cavaliers in non-league action before hitting the road for the first round of the EFL playoffs
