RECORD
SETTING DAY FOR SHOCKERS IN WIN
May 19, 2007
Lacey, WA
Pat Hutnik set
a new Northwest region PAT record by nailing 15 of 15 extra
points while the Shockers set a new points record with 105
topping the 2004 total of 99 set by the Eastside Hawks.
Bad luck and
bad bounces coupled with a sky-high Shocker team kept the
Dragons from becoming a threat as the game featured mostly
Shocker reserves.
Terrell Smith,
Corey LaDay and Theo Holman combined for 7 rushing
touchdowns while Bobby Poeltl touched the ball 4 times and
scored 4 touchdowns. Reserve fullback David Gutierrez
saw his most action of the season and capitalized with his
first TD of the season. Gutierrez, a Fort Lewis
soldier, missed 4 games early in the season while training
in Georgia and cornerback Ryan Kalalau returned from a
broken thumb to see his first action in weeks. The
Shockers special teams were truly special as Poeltl returned
two punts for touchdowns and Shane Henderson and Bryan
Hooper each scored on their own returns. The officials
ran the clock during the second half and the South Sound
offense snapped the ball just twice in the fourth quarter
when Corey LaDay broke loose around left end for a 50-yard
touchdown run, his third of the day, and Hooper and
Henderson returned their two punts returns for touchdowns.
Quarterbacks
John Stewart and Chris Gore combined to throw just 5 passes
on the day for 28 yards with Stewart completing 3 of 3 for 2
touchdowns to Poeltl. Stewart played sparingly in the
first quarter before the game was turned over to Gore.
When asked
about the final score a Shocker coach commented, "We
(Shockers) never tried to run the score up, the players just
kept playing hard. By the time we snapped the ball for
the seventh time on offense it was 42-0. You have to
play the game and not lay down. It is more
disrespectful to the Dragons to play soft and go half speed.
We didn't blitz or throw bombs trying to run the score up
and we went to our depth early, it's just one of those match
ups that happen in football. The Dragons are a gritty
bunch that just love to play football, the final score of a
game like this really doesn't matter, it's about having some
fun and working on getting better while these players are
still able to play this great game."
Randy Worrell
introduced injured Dragon Bobby McClain who flipped the coin
as an honorary captain at midfield before the game.
Donations were presented to McClain and his wife to help
with medical costs for his upcoming neck surgery.
The Shockers
have a week off before traveling to Bellingham for a 6 PM
match up with the Northwest Avalanche on June 2.
