SOUTH SOUND SCORES
57 IN 49-8 VICTORY
April 21, 2007 Lacey, WA
The South Sound Shockers running
game roared to life on Saturday in spectacular form in the
second half as the Shockers rolled to a 49-8 conference and
south division win over Lakewood. The Shockers bolted
out to a 14-0 lead as the first quarter was winding down
before a couple of mishaps on the punt unit spotted the
Wolves 8 points. A deep snap by Nate Enciso sailed
over the head of punter Randy Alderman who in turn had
trouble getting a handle on the live ball. A strange
bounce later and a Wolves defender was racing the remaining
10 yards into the endzone for 6 points. The try for
two on the PAT was batted away by Dan Chu to keep the score
14-6. On the Shockers ensuing possession, another high
snap forced Alderman to bat the ball out of the back of the
endzone for a safety and the Wolves were now within 6 at
14-8. Lakewood would get no closer.
The second quarter would see South
Sound hit the airways as QB John Stewart fired a strike to
WR Bryan Hooper along the Wolves sideline. Hooper took
the pass in stride and rode the wave in from 54-yards out
for his second TD of the season.
The Shockers came out following the
half with a determination to flex some power and mounted a
10-play running drive capped by a Marquis Johnson TD.
The second half would continue to see the
"ground-and-pound" of the offensive line take
control as running backs Terrell Smith and Theo Holman would
capitalize in the fourth quarter with runs that had the fans
roaring. Smith laid waste to four Wolves on his way to
a punishing touchdown run and after a turnover on downs, Sgt
Theo Holman led his troops to pay dirt again leaving
Lakewood players grasping for air as the shifty runner
dodged and spun his way to the east endzone, setting up the
final two defenders to collide at the 10-yard line as he
stepped in for the final score.
Wide receiver and punt returner
Bobby Poeltl ignited the crowd with some amazing returns
that looked to go nowhere from the beginning. Poeltl,
a GNFA Player of the Week and MLFN All-Purpose player of the
week for his 4 touchdown performance a week ago stepped over
to the defensive side of the ball when Micah Tanaka went
down with an apparent knee injury, and came away with two
interceptions on the afternoon.
The Shockers step out of conference
play for the next two weeks to face the Renton Ravens on
Saturday April 28 in Lacey and the West Sound Saints May 5th
in Silverdale. West Sound was crowned the 2005 NAFL2
National Champions.
